Want to switch up your look and have some fun with your hairstyle? Use braids.

Braids can can act like an accessory in your hair without actually using an accessory. They keep hair up off your face without resorting to a ponytail. And there are so many ways you can style braids, all according to your Type of beauty.

We want to show you a quick braided accent that you can add to any hairstyle, no matter your Beauty Type. This is an especially fun way to do second- and third-day hair.

And remember our tips to customize braids to your Type of beauty:

• Type 1: Just follow Sarah’s lead to create a bright, animated braid. Or add even more fun with asymmetrical braids—two braids of different widths on the same side.

• Type 2: Your braids look best when blended in with the rest of your hair. Create a softened braid by not pulling hair tight as you go, or by loosening hair with your fingers once the braid is finished.

• Type 3: Take your cue from Sarah for a rich, dynamic braid. Make sure you do this braid style right from the hairline so it’s featured and creates texture. Move in an angle to make it edgy.

• Type 4: Your bold, striking beauty will look great with clean braids that create parallel lines. Follow other parallels in your features or create two symmetrical braids, side by side.

The Best Cut:

Good hair days depend on a good cut. Marcy, our bright, animated Beauty Expert prefers the layers from a razor cut. But Sheryl, our bold, striking Expert loves the nice, clean line that scissors make.

Learn which techniques support your Type of beauty. And trust your beauty sixth sense so you can communicate confidently with your hairstylist.

The Best Color:

Fall’s coming up. And the fashion and beauty industry often tell us to go darker this time of year. But for some Types of beauty, that just won’t work.

No matter what you do to first or second day hair, it won’t look good if you have the wrong color. Make sure your color supports YOU, not the time of year.

The Best Style:

To get good style with second day hair, you have to lock that style in place on the first. Use the right tools while the blow dryer is on, and you won’t have to struggle to style your hair when it’s dry.

How? Change the blow dryer setting. As a Type 3, I thought hotter and faster was better. But I turned it down and learned a trick to cut down on frizz. Click here if you haven’t seen it yet.

The Best Second Day Hair!

Get it right the first time. Use product and 5 extra minutes getting things right on the first day and your second day hair will just need smoothing product to touch up. You might even make it to third-day hair.

Wash your bangs. Sarah, our rich, dynamic Beauty Expert, pulls her hair back in the shower with a headband and washes just her bangs. This gives her fresh hair around her face without styling everything again.

Refresh (or don’t). There are some great dry shampoos out there—like the Dressing Your Truth True Refresh—to perk up your hair on second days. Use it if you like it. But remember, always check in with your beauty sixth sense. Sheryl explains in the video why she doesn’t like second day hair at all.

• Bright, Animated Type 1

Putting together an outfit might not look like a process for you—not a structured one anyway. That’s great! Embrace your random, spontaneous nature and put on whatever feels fresh. Once you’re dressed, stop long enough to check in that you’re wearing something that feels fun to you.

Pay attention to what Marcy says in the video about her biggest reward with mixing color.

• Subtle, Soft Type 2

Your attention to detail is a strength, so don’t let the details overwhelm you. If you want to wear a particular item, start there. Then enjoy assembling details around that favorite item. You might be more willing to try something new if you remind yourself that you don’t have to repeat anything you don’t like.

• Rich, Dynamic Type 3

Like a Type 2, you might choose an item you want to wear and build an outfit around it. But you’ll be more swift about it. Make sure your closet’s set up for quick, practical results. If your priority item for the day isn’t working, you can scrap it and go with an outfit you know will work. Just try again later.

In the video, Sarah talks about items she likes to build an outfit around, and I explain my funny approach to clothes I haven’t worn recently.

• Bold, Striking Type 4

When you’re Dressing Your Truth, you have a high standard for what you keep in your closet and put on your body. That’s great! Don’t add anything to an outfit that doesn’t meet your standard. If you don’t like something—even if it’s an item that worked for you in the past—don’t feel obligated to hold onto it. Just keep perfecting your wardrobe.

Three more great outfit tips for all Types

• When you think about outfit ideas, remember to also think about movement. The list of your Beauty Profile key words in my book explains your movement—including the way you put together an outfit! Read through the list again with this in mind and embrace your own unique process.

• Create a style library. It doesn’t have to be professional or high-tech. Just take a picture of today’s outfit with the camera on your phone. Putting together an outfit with what you have becomes that much easier when you have an archive of cute outfit ideas you already came up with!

• Try new things and listen to YOUR style. You have a beauty sixth sense: use it.
