Ask Carol! Can an accomplished actor successfully play a role that is not true to their Type?

Why are some movies more successful and more entertaining than other movies? Is it just the story? Or could it be the appropriate casting of the actors in the roles that match their Energy Type? Do we like these movies more because they feels more “natural” to have an actor playing a role that matches their true Energy Type?  Could the movies where actors are playing roles contrary to their Type feel so unnatural to us that we cannot enjoy them? There are so many crime/detective shows in the US. I have been curious about the cast of Castle; Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, and Seamus Dever. What Type are they and, if you watch or have seen the show, are they playing true to their Types?

It seems to me the most versatile actors would be the Type 1′s as they can so easily adapt to other types. Would you say that’s true? I’m thinking Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks (and the movies they’ve done together), Meryl Streep, etc. I wonder if these Type 1′s are so popular because they can ‘take on’ the energies of other types and are able to connect and disconnect quickly.
Just thinking out loud here….er, typing out loud.

I think you’re exactly right. Meryl Streep was fabulous and absolutely convincing as a type 4 in Devil Wears Prada, and Doubt.(even though she is a type 1) I actually though she was more convincing than in Mama mia where she played a 1. Go figure…

    Hi Carol,

Colin Firth is a Type 4, please, what about Geoffrey Rush?
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’ve been amazed at Mr. Rush’s ability to make ‘characters’ believable. Like he was In “Shine”.

He’s so lumpy but likable, one of my favorite actors….lol

    thanks so much,

So I really enjoy Sci-fi movies, and am curious what type lends itself best to those.
I was also wondering the types from a few Sci-fi movies.
From Star Wars, I know Harrison Ford is a type 3, but I’m curious about Mark Hamill (type 3?) and Carrie Fisher (type 1?).
Tron:Legacy was another movie I really enjoyed. I think Garrett Hedlund is a 3, and I also thought Olivia Wilde is a 3, Jeff Bridges seemed like a 2.
How am I doing? Should I give up and go watch another movie? :D

    ~Type 1 having fun!

Actually, Colin Firth was nominated for an Oscar for “Single Man”, but lost to Jeff Bridges, who won the Oscar for best actor, for “Crazy Heart”.

Dear Katelon, You are right! I realized this after I shot the video! Thanks for pointing it out.

I’d like to point out a different aspect factoring into what roles end up really being amazing–life experience!

From what I’ve seen and heard of actor’s or actresses backgrounds, if they can’t relate emotionally to a role, it’s not convincing. So not only would someone’s type play into that, but also what they’ve been through in life. An example would be that a person who has experienced motherhood plays a much more convincing mother, etc.

    Just throwing that out there!

    Dear Carol,
thank you for your answer it helps quite a bit!!! it will make casting much easier. You book Dressing Your Truth has helped me with many aspects of film making, not just casting as well as other forms of marking art, even my more solo endeavors such as painting.

    Thanks again!
