My purse always has 4 kinds of lipgloss, gum, wrappers and reciepts, wallet, giant hoard of keychains to hold my 2 keys (so that I can always find them by the big metallic gob), nail clippers, phone, thought notebook, glasses, hand sanitizer!

Emily, you look sooo adorable! Love the colors and your cute, cute haircut! I totally relate to the randomness of your purse and having things in it for a long time and then cleaning it out and it getting back to the same state quite rapidly! I don’t like to carry such a large purse, but I do pack it all in to the size of purse I have!

I am a Type 4/1 but this is my purse exactly!! I find it hard to be more organized even though I feel like life would be a little easier if it were. I resonate with a lot of the Type 4 tendencies but when it comes to how I keep my house and my things, I am all Type 1! Being a Type 4/1 is like living with 2 different people in one person…it can get exhausting! :)

Emily I loved your purple dress & yellow sweater!

I am a Type 1 & carry a smaller purse. I have a wallet that is hot pink & yellow that has a zipper close so I can stuff it very full :) I always cary sun glasses, phone, hair pins & a makeup case that right now has 12 lipsticks/lipglosses! I like to keep what is in my purse to a minimum because I have lots of purses & I have been known to change purses to match what I am wearing for the day. It is not unusual for me to use 3-4 different purses during the week.

OH I LOVE HER! She gives me a smile everytime. I sat here with a grin from ear to ear watching her. I am glad too that she is part of your team. I needed these beautiful/cute type 1s you have brought in to the mix.
I am T1 too. My younger sister just under me is T1 (2yrs younger). She always had a big bag full of treasure. I always had the small bag with very little. It was nice to hear that I wasn’t a broken T1 (hehe) cause I kept going to the store for a new purse. I would carry just a wallet if I didn’t need to carry baby diapers in something.
One Sunday during church conference my sister pulled an apple out of her bag and began to chomp on it while laying down (she was 14yr). My type 4 sister had a heart attack right there. MMMMoooMMm! she’s eating an APPLE! I was surprised too. But always trying to be like my T4 sister. ug!
Thank you for blessing us with insights to our own perfectness!

Oh Emily! How I love you! This video made me smile in a good way, so thank-you for sharing with us. And, I have to say, Carol made me laugh at the first when she began to organize the contents as they were presented. :) I’m going to have to agree with Carol though, I think it’s time we appreciate all aspects of ourselves, even how our purses express who we are. I love energy profiling for this. In all my T4-ness I have a drive to truly understand (as much as I can) the individual and to relate to where they’re coming from (as much as I can). And so, again, for this reason energy profiling has really expanded my view of life and those who share this journey with me. Emily, never be anything but you and we’ll always love you for it!

Emily, thanks for doing this w/ Carol! What fun!! And Carol’s point that this is about loving ourselves for who we are, letting go of the judgements, etc. is what makes Energy Profiling and Dressing Your Truth so very powerful and transformative.

Renee, I too noticed Carol organizing the contents, laughed & thought, “Yah, that’s what I’d be doing too.”

I’m a type 3/4. I’ve had the same purse since 1987 – a substantial cloth bag with a heavy duty nylon liner & strap with an upholstery weight & patterned fabric for a cover. The current cover is this purse’s 3rd incarnation, always in a rich, dynamic color. I remove the old worn out cover, use it as a pattern for sizing the replacement and then sew on the new cover to the liner and reattach the strap. This last time I made some compartments to sew into the interior to keep things separate and yes, certain things always go into the same compartments so that I can find them quickly when I need them. I love this bag because I can carry so much in it so that I’m always prepared for most situations. I don’t know how many times I’ve pulled out my Swiss army knife to come to the rescue of some situation of need!

I’m a T1/T3 OR a T3/T1…. (not so sure yet haha!) BUT I do relate a lot to this. I carried a smaller purse but it was always so jammed full it was probably just as heavy (or heavier!) than hers! I used to carry at least 4-5 lipglosses in a little front pocket… and my wallet still has like every card I’ve ever been given in it haha! Plus pictures.. oh and also every school ID or other ID (food handlers, drivers license, military dependent ID) every card i’ve ever had haha! Always lots of trash… millions of receipts. You name it. Now, I’ve started just carrying a diaper bag (which is humongous lol) with all my daughter’s things.. in case of any ANY situation, i have something for her. So my habits that I used to have for myself are now with my daughter’s things lol All I carry for me now is my wallet which is always so full it can barely zip. Great insight… it’s the little things like this that keep adding up to make me believe so much that I really am a primary type 1!! :]

Oh WOW! That could have been my purse if only it had a rumpled christmas pageant program and some petrified candy corn in it! I’ve thought myself to be a type 2 but I’m seriously wondering if I’m correct. Thank you so much Emily! Thank you Carol, I have NEVER been made to feel that a messy purse or anything else should be anything but shameful and cause guilt and embarrassment. I’ve felt judged by others and that I’m lower in the hierarchy of women because I think of organization as a womanly ability that I don’t have. Thanks!

Emily! You are such a brave soul to empty your purse for Carol on camera!!!! My purse is the lighter type. And when I try to prepare by having everything in my purse, I usually have everything BUT what I need. So I gave up and keep it as light as possible!

As a type 1/4, I can totally relate to Jenna’s comment about, “is like living with 2 different people in one person…it can get exhausting!”
This has been me for many years! I do organize all my bills from lowest to highest in my purse, but it does eventually get messed up, only to go back to being organized again. I like things simple with clean lines, AND my closet is most often organized by color, type of clothing, etc. I have often wondered how anyone else is going to ‘get me’ when I’m so all over the place – (feeling like a type 4 inside and leading with that perfecting thought first, but giggly and looking and acting like a type 1!)

But I have found that dressing my truth has helped me in a surprising way. When I say shocking things like I tend to do without thinking (and I don’t find them shocking. I find out by other people’s reactions to what I’ve said when asked to express my opinion), it’s not as shocking to people when I’m dressing like a type 1 – which is weird to me. I wouldn’t have thought it would work that way. I also have found, that because of the principles I’m learning in DYT, my strong type 4 secondary isn’t as judgmental of my type 1 random self – which is so freeing and healthy!

Emily, you’re awesome! Thank you for sharing with all of us.

I’m totally hooked on the Carol Blog (and so excited that my daughters and I recently had the opportunity to meet Carol live and in person!) and look forward to new videos each week! I don’t watch much tv, so these are my ‘episodes’ each week I wait for and give myself the gift of time to watch in my very busy life! :)

Leslie, I laughed with your post.

I’m a T1, with a secondary 3. I have a hard time finding just the right purse, because it needs to be small (6×10 or so), have easy one-handed access to my money and phone, and hold everything for any possibility.
Here’s the list of what’s in that small purse (probably only you other Type 1′s care!):
In addition to all the wallet-related items in one spot there (cards, cash, coins, my DYT wallet-sized color card), I have lotion, four kinds of lip gloss/chapstick, fingernail clippers, safety pins, bandaids, emergency whistle, measuring tape, two kids’ immunization records (because I’d never remember otherwise!), an eraser, a bottle of peppermint oil, trial-size dental floss, tiny bit of first aid ointment, a mirror, coupons, a few breath mints, sometimes a diaper and a little baggie of wet wipes, a flash drive, a small notebook for my kids to doodle on, couple extra pens, small notebook for random ideas or recipes I find while out & about, a small plastic spoon, and, um, feminine need products. And part of a broken pair of my daughter’s glasses that I forgot was there. I thought my Swiss Army Knife was still in there; I’ve gotta go track it down and put it back in.

Emily, you are SO not alone! And I am HAPPY with the contents of my purse! (Except now I’ve thought of a couple more things to add- a necklace for days I forgot to put one on, and a couple hair elastics.)

It’s amazing how we can dis ourselves over something as harmless as how we “do” our purses! Whenever we start comparing ourselves to an arbitrary ideal (Carol really nailed this on last week’s club night when she dismantled the notion of beauty as a competition), we always wind up feeling wrong or “less than.” And sometimes it’s subtle things like the purse issue that quietly nag at us and steal our self esteem and joy. I’m a T2/1 and I’ve NEVER been at peace with my purse!I’m SO looking forward to the next segment. Thanks, Carol, for this affirming video, and for tackling this DYT detail! These intimate, “little” things really do mean a lot!

What fun! I am a Type 2 who needs to have her “piles” organized inside her purse. I always carry a medium-large purse as I need room for four separate bags (zip-up wallet; meds bag – asthma; calendar, pens, notes paper; and makeup bag). And it has to be big enough for me to throw in a 9×11 inch note pad: I am a writer and love to sketch things when out in public.
I used to spend hours looking at and debating over purses in department stores, and invariably bought a leather purse (too heavy) that fit my schoolteacher image (too dour). Since retiring, my great find came from the teen section at a local store: heavy-duty fabric bags (very light in weight)that ZIP – a must for me – and that have one interior zippered pocket for my passport, D L, car insurance papers. The fabrics are colorful prints, they are washable, and I can stuff them with all kinds of goodies when I travel!
My sweet sister gave me a purse-organizer for my birthday a few years ago. I tried it and it just drove me crazy because I very seldom change purses (the raison-d’etre for the thing)and I had to look in every pocket for what I needed. I gave it to a friend who just loves it – could she be a Type 3?
I love this system; it has given me permission to get rid of so many non-Type 2 items from my closets, including all those old leather purses. And yes, I even carry one of my large bags when I go to dinner at a posh restaurant. I figure I am of an age that nobody can complain!!!

I would love to not carry a purse but can’t. I had no idea what I was carrying were “options” since some of it was may need and have needed just don’t ALWAYS need. It also explains why my purse keeps cluttering up, which actually drives me crazy. *sigh* I buy small lotion too but often find the hairpins or earrings that I forgot I tucked in there a month or more ago. I have several shades of lipstick because I was always running out and forgetting to take the only tube I had even for the day. What an eye opener here! And Emily you are so cute!

I’m a Type 4 (secondary 2), so I do like my bills to be in order of denomination. I really love the way Carol asked her to embrace and love her purse the way it is, rather than resist (which only causes unnecessary angst and frustration). Kudos to Carol for a loving and supportive purse exploration!

And PS–I carry my cousin’s business cards but have to tuck them in my checkbook. I was so glad to see Emily with business cards! Her wallet could be mine too. I NEVER saw anyone’s wallet that looked so close to mine before. I stuff bills in randomly when handed change but feel compelled to go clean it all back up. I have spare keys in my change section along with safety pins.

I hate carrying a purse – in fact I’ll even leave the house to take a walk and carry nothing on me – no wallet, no phone – I just feel better this way! I figure anything I run into that might cause a problem I can handle on my own! I’m a type 1.

But if I have to carry a purse because I am going somewhere – I do take something to write with and on, and I have a little book of travel tips because traveling is one of my passions.

Emily, you are adorable. I love being around T1 energy. I must admit I was having a little panic attack watching you unload your purse. OMG, no little slots or pockets to keep things separated. I never knew other people don’t align their bills in the same direction and stack them low denomination to high. I’d never be able to find anything. I think it’s great that you can. My T4 purse has lots of zippers and slots, so everything is exactly where it should be. I do carry a tape measure (for shopping) and safety pins and a little sewing kit, but they are zipped into their own little pocket, not to fraternize with my makeup pocket, nor money compartment. Pen, calendar, notepad gets a pocket, too (there’s a little loop to hold the pen). Phone pocket, keys pocket, glasses keeper. I would never buy a new purse that didn’t have the proper number of zippered pockets. :-)

I’m still reading Carol’s book “Dressing Your Truth” and am still not sure if I am Type 4 or Type 2. I am leaning towards Type 4 with a lot of 2 so it was interesting to read your post! Your purse sounds just like mine — lots of compartments or small bags inside the larger one. I am also constantly in search of the “perfect” handbag — haven’t found it yet so alternate between some favorites depending on if I need/want a larger or smaller one. I have always kept my bills in denomination order — you mean people don’t. Oh, and they have to face all in the same direction and same way up! LOL

Hi Argentina! Thanks for your comment! We like to use the word random rather than mess, because in the eyes of a Type 1 it is not a mess, it’s just random and spontaneous! Mess tends to infer a judgment, and one of the biggest reasons I love Beauty Profiling is that it takes away the judgment. There is no one right way, their are many ways to be beautiful!

Interesting what a purse can say about us. I am one that can carry just a small coin purse with license and credit card or the big bag that can carry all of my needs and snacks and be way to heavy. I will try and organize and then find that I still have to go through every compartment to find what I need because I forgot where it was put. Is that a type 1 or just totally unorganized.? Ha!

    Hi guys!

I’m a Type 1 who can’t bear to have a handbag at all. My purse has to be small enough to fit in the back pocket of my jeans or it feels too much & I do order my money in there. The coin section has 2 parts, so I put coppers one side and silver/pound coins the other and the note section has 2 parts & I put the notes not only in order of denomination but also the right way around!!! I wonder if my secondary is 4. I also iron my clothes and have my closet in order & my space is usually very tidy. This to me is the only way it feels light. Any kind of clutter feels heavy to me & ironed clothes look so much more fresh. When i create I make a lot of mess but i have to clear up after. I am 100% sure I’m Type 1 and Anne Tuttle Brown did my photo typing & couldn’t see an obvious secondary. Are there any other Type 1′s out there who get this?! Love ya’all! Juliet XXXXXXXX

Thank you for sharing this! Emily your hair is so awesome! Right now I have a wallet that is so packed that I can barely close it. I carry other things separately like phone and keys etc. My money is usually crumpled and kept in random places as well as in my wallet. I’ve only lost a hundred dollar bill once (because I had it in my pocket) but found it again the same day on the floor board of my car. My randomness is a little stressful occasionally but mostly because I feel I should be something else at times. This video clip is validating though and I am loving my type oneness. A purse can feel uncomfortable to me especially if its too big or in the past if it was black. Now I know why it didn’t work for me…Thanks to beauty profiling! I am now looking for a new cute purse and know I will fill it with all my possibles. My purse tends to look like the way I pack for a trip. I take a lot of everything and feel secure in knowing its there just in case. :)

SO funny! I’m a type 1, and when she started going through her purse, I decided to look through mine, too…I laughed because it was so similar! I have the travel-sized lotion, lip gloss, two types of gum, tootsie rolls, change floating around, pictures I brought to my stylist when I got my hair cut a month ago, and even brownie crumbs (gross!)

I also thought it was interesting that you said sometimes Type 1s like to carry hardly anything, because I also have a really tiny purse that only fits my wallet and phone that I love!

  35. Lissie Says:

I am a T1/4 that is totally on the opposite spectrum. Several years ago I was tired of carrying so much around and I worked to streamline what I needed to carry with me. The must needs are now a wallet that is actually originally for photos. My keys (which has only the absolute necessaries on it, no doodads). My cell phone, and usually then I will add one other thing I carry with me – reading glasses, lip gloss, sun glasses, gloves.

I will say that I love having multiples. I have three types of lip gloss, four-six pairs of sunglasses, two-four pairs of gloves, an additional two wallets (with specific functions), three small clutch-type purses, another three medium size purses for when I actually need to carry a lot more stuff.

And I arrange my bills numerically, but I arrange them largest on top so that I can always be connected with the more abundant side. Though I will find cash months later in purse or coat pockets.

Loving this series. Excited to see what’s in the T4 purse.

My purse–my car–my house is so much like this! And I just realize how I have a constant commentary in my head: “This is a mess. You need to clean this up/do something about this! Really, if you were more ‘together,’ you’d have a more organized purse/car/house.”

I love, love, love DYT and the enlightenment and freedom it’s giving me. ;)

What a fun video… I’ve had very small purses for long periods for my phone, mini-debit-card holder & keys, with a lip gloss & a pen, & then a very large bag I keep in the car with everything I could imagine needing for work, for someone else… that ‘s too heavy to schlep around with. And then as I watched I realized I have a type-4-ish structure with lots of cool compartments… the outside is a blush-colored alligator skin type, firm material, with a bow, & the inner lining is like Mad Max colors & patterns, with attached mirror, separate zippered sections that I use… it’s like a mini-suitcase & I can see everything in it easily… though I’ve ‘found’ things I didn’t notice had gotten ‘lost’ at the bottom.

Thanks, Emily, for reminding me that my randomness prefers some firm structure to shape my movement. Very cool. What’s better now is this is a real reflection of my life… I’ve lost a lot of weight recently… because I like the structure of a program that limits what doesn’t work for me so the rest of me has that renewed lightness & now I get that that balance isn’t something I need to question or judge, or… permit others to judge. Hallelujah!
